Clare Blackburn’s group first identified and characterised the fetal epithelial stem cell population from which the thymus develops. The lab now focuses on molecular regulation of thymic stem cells. They recently identified a population of stem cells in mice that, on transplantation, is sufficient to generate a fully functional thymus. The thymus plays a central role in development of the body’s immune system.
